Eekhoff has also branched out into more of a fine-art market with a project centered on insect photography. “I have a reputation for finding interesting props,” says Eekhoff. “I have a big prop collection, and I buy things as I see them.” On a 2002 trip to New York City, he stumbled upon a SoHo store called Evolution that sold an array of insect samples. Like many of the props he collects, he was not quite certain how he would use them, but he bought a butterfly and two beetles. In preparation for the 2003 Olympus Visionaries exhibition, he shot an image of a beetle—and discovered that it really resonated with people. He’s planning to spend more time on that project this year, hoping to partner with an environmental organization to create images about biodiversity.
