Canadian Geographic licensed three images published in the March/April 2007 issue and were used in the overall design b art director Suzanne Morin. The photographs assisted in illustrating the concept of genetic barcoding and th building of a data base called the Barcode o Life Data System. This data base will be used to archive and map the genetic DNA of all species on earth and assist in classifying biodiversity. This will also determine where a particular species “fits” within the genealogical tree of life.

Stay tuned to Entomology-Photography.com. Within a couple of weeks, I will be adding to the collection Acrocinus longimanus, Catacanthus incarnatus, Catacantus nigripes, Ranzania bertolini, Polybothris sumptuosa siperba and an additional version of Oncomeris flavicornis and Tropidacris dux.

Also to be added is Torynorrhina flammea which would look great against Rhomborrhina resplendens.

It has been three long years deciding whether or not to create this website, publicize these insect photographs and make them available to the public as finely-crafted art prints. Growing appreciation and interest towards the photographs and my treatment of entomological subject matter was the motivation to move forward. Fundamentally, this project began with an honest and pure fascination for these creatures and a burgeoning personal collection of specimens. Photography came later.

I am hopeful that entomologists, forensic entomologists, biologists, zoologists, scientists and general enthusiasts of insects will find pleasure in these photographs. My intent is to add new photographs every month and to expand the collection of butterflies — starting with the Bird Wings and progressing to the moths. Over time, a series of three photographs will be taken of each family of insect and, with your input, additional specimens will be photographed.

The long term goal is to create a traveling show to raise awareness of the natural world and the special place the world of insects inhabit alongside humans.

I am approaching this work as a creative photographer, not a scientist. Any input, history, references to mythology and personal stories you may have are encouraged (just add them in the comments) to make this blog more than a portal for my photography.

Welcome to Entomology-Photography.com — this is just the beginning!

Every morning I am pleasantly greeted with Eurytides protesilaus nigricornis reproduced as a 30 x 40 inch Exhibition print hanging in our sun room. after all this time, I still enjoy looking at this beautiful specimen and the photographic print. I never seem to tire of it’s composition and how the content reminds me of our connection with the natural world. For a photographer to still find pleasure in their work over such a long time — this speaks volumes!
